Senate Confirms Officials To Various Tech-Related Positions
by Drew Clark
The Senate confirmed a host of presidential nominations bearing on the technology industry on Sunday, including the heads of the patent office, FTC and other officials responsible for technology policy in the Commerce Department.
The Senate also re-confirmed Jonathan Adelstein to the FCC, extending the tenure of the Democrat at the independent agency until June 30, 2008. The chamber approved all of the nominations by voice vote before Congress concluded its weekend session.
The confirmations removed the “recess appointment” label from FTC Chairwoman Deborah Majoras, the second-ranking official at Commerce and the heads of several department agencies. The president can make such appointments when Congress is not in session, but the appointments are only temporary, through the end of the next session of Congress.
